Visual Skills: Book Cover Roughs & Peer Crit

Final Roughs:

• My roughs explored a range of media and processes including acrylic paint, markers, gel pens, collage and paper cut.
• I played with elements of negative images, silhouettes, blocks of colour, reduction, simple shapes and forms, hand lettering,
various compositions, limited colour palettes and repetition as referenced in my research.
• I found the simple compositions were the most successful; particularly the blue / purple drawers cover
and red / black negative space cabinets with ant and mushroom motifs.
• These roughs are purely analogue processes and techniques on newsprint but I would like to incorporate
a digital approach for the final outcome.
• The red and black colour palette really attracts my attention and keeps my focus. Possible cover to use?
• I went for a naive, charming and playful aesthetic, rather than vintage or technical, to entice the audience.

Peer Crit Feedback Response Sheet:

• Here is the feedback conducted from two peer crit groups I took part in.
• This sheet has allowed me to reflect on the feedback from my peers and take into consideration the next steps I need to
undertake in order to create a successful book cover from my rough designs.
