My chosen motif from the available selection is that of the Circus... and I would like to specifically choose the mighty Carousel Horse from the overarching theme. Carousel Horses have lots of charm and nostalgia attached to them, for me personally, and many of my happiest moments are of the carousel at Christmas (which I still visit every year, even now in my late 20s!). It will be something I enjoy investigating in a diagnostic approach over the coming months!
• These initial pages represent a turning point for me.
• I wanted to start in the way I would usually draw when approaching a task; in a very meticulous manner - ensuring the proportions are correct, all details are present, shading implies light and shadow, etc.
• I wanted to push myself further and learn from my observational drawing sessions; a more detailed illustration doesn't necessarily make a more powerful image. How can I reduce this to its basic parts and still communicate a carousel horse to an audience?
• In the following pages I explored basic outlines, changes in line width, negative space and more simple curvilinear or angular examples.
• Some of my favourites from my initial ideas are the ones that have nonsensical proportions, whimsical features and a sense of charm and personality - which doesn't come from the drawings that are accurate. Hurrah! I'm onto something!
Library Books
Rather than just using Google images, I wanted to visit the library to see if any books were there on my chosen subject. I often find a book with large, colourful, glossy images dedicated to the craft or subject is a lot more beneficial for my research rather than just the first few results on Google images!
• Carousel Animals: Artistry in Motion
• The Carousel Animal
• These are all beautiful examples of horses and will benefit me greatly in terms of inspiration! The patterns, textures, shapes, forms colours and high resolution are just incredible and are much better than anything I could have hoped to find on search engines or Pinterest!
• They already have enabled me to have lots of thoughts in my head about where this project will go next.
